Fixing the Microsoft Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death

I fixed my Xbox 360's red ring of death in 25 minutes, and I'm about to tell you how. Did you know that the Microsoft Xbox 360 "Red Ring of Death" rate is reportedly over 50%? That's just stupid. In a survey of 5,000 console owners, 54.6% of them had been hit with the red ring of death! Completely unacceptable.

It happened to me just last week. My girlfriend was away for the weekend and it was Friday night. I had a few friends over, and we were playing Madden '10. Excited to have a whole weekend where I could play some games (I rarely have the time I used to anymore), things were looking good. We were midway through our second game, and right out of nowhere, everything just died on us.

There it was when we tried turning it back on - the three red rings. I couldn't believe it. The thought of going into football season without my 360 really, really bugged me.

One of my friends had experienced the same thing last year, and had to wait over 7 weeks before he finally got his 360 back from Microsoft. I had also learned that Microsoft may charge $100 and up to fix this after doing some reading online. I obviously wasn't happy about this.

Luckily, I have a bunch of friends who know a lot about these things, and I decided to text one of them. He got back to me and recommended a repair kit that his brother used just a few months ago. Said it worked like a charm.

I checked it out and saw that they promised I'd have mine fixed in an hour or less, or I'd get all of my money back, guaranteed. Sounded good enough to me, especially considering my alternatives.

Just 25 minutes later I was the proud owner of a working Xbox 360 again. I followed their suggestions to a t and they worked. I was kind of surprised that Microsoft couldn't provide this info to its owners, but I guess that comes with the territory when you're a corporate giant.

I don't trust Microsoft's products anymore, but hopefully my red ring days are in the past. If it does come back (I'm sure it will with my luck), I have this guide to get me through the issues, and I'll probably have it fixed in half the time next time around.

Wes Craven's production of Nightmare On Elm Street grossed over $25 million at U.S. box offices and has become one of the most popular horror movies of all time, with it's villian, Freddy Krueger, becoming one of the most well recognized movie villains of cinematic history. The premise of the film is the question of distinction between dreams and reality. Is never sleeping again the only way to end the terror?

Three, Four...Better Lock Your Door... The origin of Nightmare On Elm Street lies in several experiences from Wes Craven's childhood. His inspiration for the basis of the film lies in several articles printed by the LA Times on a group of Cambodian refugees and their children, who were were suffering horrific nightmares, after which they refused to sleep. Ever since that night, Krueger has taken his revenge on the parents of Springwood by stalking their children through their dreams.

Seven, Eight...Gonna Stay Up Late...Platinum Dunes is producing a remake of Nightmare On Elm Street and will keep the original high school setting. The reboot, directed by Samuel Bayer and written by Wesley Strick, ("Arachniphobia" , "Cape Fear") based on Wes Craven's own adaptation, portrays Freddy as a child molester, the way Craven originally intended. The biggest difference, however, is in Freddy himself. Played this time by Oscar nominee Jackie Earl Haley, Freddy will be quieter...but deadlier! (Coincidentally, Haley auditioned for a role in the original Nightmare On Elm Street but was beat out by his friend, Johnny Depp, who just went along for the company!)

The Italian: It was a brilliant heist that went of perfectly. The only thing left is to split up the loot. Now the rest of the gang, and his daughter Stella, are out with a vengeance to get their money back, and deal with Steve.

Tips on How to Blow Smoke Rings

If you want to become adept at blowing smoke rings so that you can show others at a get together or party, you are going to want to practice. Blowing smoke rings looks like a simple thing to do, but you will find that there are mechanics and techniques that you need to employ if you expect good results. With practice, they will become easier and almost second nature so that you don't have to think about them as you blow them.

When you are practicing your smoke rings, make sure that you have a good, tightly packed cigar. While some people use cigarettes, the tobacco in the cigarettes does not usually have as tight of a pack as the cigars do. When the tobacco is tightly packed, you will find that it is easier to get thicker, richer smoke, and this is a key element in blowing smoke rings.

When you are ready with your tightly packed cigar, light it with your butane lighter, making sure that the entire end is lit properly so that you can take a drag more easily. When the end is lit, and after you have taken a few puffs to ensure that the smoke flows freely, you will want to take a large drag. Hold the smoke in your mouth at the top of your throat " you don't want to inhale.

Next, you want to press your tongue downward and form your lips into the shape of an "O", as though you were going to say "ooh". Try to keep the shape wide while still holding the smoke in your throat. Again, this is something that will come with practice. When you have the shape formed, you can then push small puffs of smoke toward the front of your mouth. It helps if you imagine that you are saying "uh" silently while you are doing this. This will then send those small smoke puffs out of your mouth and they should form rings that float gently away.

As you can see, blowing smoke rings is not as simple as just blowing smoke through your mouth. It takes some practice and some time to get the technique down just right. Why Tiger's Loss is More Than Just a Loss

In a very interesting and atypical twist today, Tiger Woods blew a lead entering the final round of the PGA Championships, losing to Y.E. Yang, a relatively unknown golfer. Woods had simply never lost a major after leading or being tied for the lead, and the world was shocked after witnessing today's events.

While fans were excited by the turn of events today, this really can't be good for golf. The PGA can't be happy about this, nor could any of Tiger's major endorsers. Without a major in 2009, people are beginning to write off Tiger Woods, thinking that he may very well be past his prime.

Woods is by no means past his prime. After returning from an injury that ended his 2008 campaign, Woods has bounced back with wins at five tournaments. Some of these involved some vintage Woods Sunday comebacks. Unfortunately, the majors are far more watched than the other tournaments, so the typical sports fan doesn't realize that all's not lost in Tiger's corner.

While everyone loves to talk about Yang and what he did today, this was a crippling blow to the PGA in 2009. There were simply no exciting stories that capped off the year of majors. Tom Watson nearly became the oldest golfer (by far) to ever win a major, before losing it on the final day. Woods went the entire year without a major, virtually unheard of during his career.

This one is another story in its own though. Yang is very unlikely to win another tournament of this scope, and will probably fade right back into obscurity. And for the time being, Woods' pursuit of Jack Nicklaus' record is in doubt.

What do people get to look to now? "Oh, I can't wait to see Tiger take revenge in the exciting series of FedEx cup event"? No! They are looking to, "Hey, Anthony Kim or Rory McIllroy are ready to take the torch next year."

Golf needs Tiger Woods just as much as he needs more majors. Tiger has given a face to golf, a sport that's sorely lacked one for so many years. Tiger is golf's Michael Jordan, and needs to return to this status in 2010.

We need Tiger to be Tiger and everyone else to watch in amazement as he wins Majors, no offense to them, but fans don't want Y.E. Yang, Angel Cabrera, or Lucas Glover to win. They want Tiger, and Tiger needs to deliver.

An Area's Climate Depends on Its Latitude

The sun and atmosphere work together to create different climates. The air masses are moved by the changes in temperature. The disparate temperatures on the Earth's surface are caused by the different proximities of these areas to the sun. The equator is near the sun on the Earth's entire orbit.

This means that the surface on the Earth at the equator is hot, sunny and has many hours of daylight. The poles are the farthest from the sun and are the coldest and darkest areas of the planet when it is winter and sunny but still cold in what is considered summer there. The farther from the equator you get, the more seasonal the climates become. The climates in the middle of the equators and poles at what are called the middle latitudes are four season climates.

The air moves in masses caused by these irregular heating patterns and the boundaries between them are called fronts. The atmosphere is constantly moving the air around in an attempt to gain equilibrium, or equalized pressure between the warm and cool air. Air that moves also hits stable air and all the molecules mix together. When the cold air moves into warm air, it is called a cold front; a warm front comes from the opposite motion of warm air into cold.

Warm fronts rise above and on top of cold air. As the warm air cools the molecules form water vapor, and become clouds. First are the high cirrus clouds, then come the aptly named mid level followed by thick stratus clouds. Thick stratus clouds are the ones that sometimes cause rain and wind conditions.

When a cold front hits a warm air mass, the result can be more volatile. Convection occurs when the cold front sharply pushes the instable warm air up. These winds create cumulus clouds and these clouds bring the thunderstorms. The upward motion also creates low pressure situations that make the wind blow harder. Along the cold air in front there will be the actual hard rain and sharp wind. The air behind it that has warmed a bit will simply bring rain. If the cold air takes over the warm air slowly, it becomes an occluded front and stratus clouds with light precipitation result. Stationary fronts occur when two very weak fronts meet and neither takes over the other. They simply sit and rain on the area until all of the air warms up or cools down and progresses on as a cold or warm front.

The oceanic regions of the Earth encompass 70% of the surface area. Climates in coastal areas are affected by the temperature of the seas, as saltwater is a very good conductor of both hot and cold temperatures. Great Britain is much warmer than most of the other land in its same latitude because of the warm Gulf Stream.

Brett Favre? Really?

Just when you thought that maybe, just maybe Brett Favre would stay true to his word and stay retired, he goes ahead and signs a reported $10-12 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings. In fact, it turns out Favre was never really planning on staying retired. According to a report yesterday by Jay Glazer of FoxSports.com, many Vikings players "knew" Favre would be in a Vikings uniform. One anonymous Vikings player stated, "I'm telling you it's already done." Wow. I guess we just got fooled (again) by Brett Favre. But in this article, I will try to show you how Favre's appearance will NOT make the Vikings any better than they were before.

First, I'll start with the obvious: his age. He's already 39 years old, and will be turning 40 in October. While QB's tend to be able to play later than other positions such as RB, even QB's usually hit the wall at 40 years old. And even though he's proven to be one of the toughest players in NFL history, his body may not be able to take any more punishment. He's got plenty of wear and tear on him that makes him very susceptible to injury. Not to mention...

...he's already coming off major bicep surgery! Plus, he still has a slight tear in his rotator cuff, which could become much worse. So, we've got a 40-year old QB who's coming off major surgery and is technically still injured. That's got to instill lots of confidence in your team! But people will say, "but Josh, he's 3x MVP, 10x Pro Bowler, and a sure-fire Hall of Famer. He'd be a great addition to any team." While there is no denying that Favre is undoubtedly a HOF QB, there's just one problem...the Vikings aren't getting that HOF QB! You can't possibly believe Favre will be able to come back and produce as he did in his prime, especially not after coming off bicep surgery. The only thing he could possibly bring is leadership, which I'll admit is valuable, but not if your play doesn't help the club. Heck, look at John Smoltz. He's a fantastic leader, but if you can't pitch (2-5, 8.32 ERA), you won't have a job. Leadership can't replace production. Similarly, if Favre throws 22 INT's like he did last year, he probably won't have a job, either.

Look at the way that Favre looked during the second half of 2008 with the Jets. So many picks, his injuries, and everything led the team to implosion. He threw 9 interceptions during the last five games of the season. While he'll obviously play over Tarvaris Jackson in Minnesota, I have to say that Jackson's last four games consisted of just one interception.

Then there's the whole issue of team chemistry. It seemed like Jackson had a close bond with his wide receivers. This is a critical element to a team's success. Favre, on the other hand, is coming into a team that he doesn't know, missed an entire training camp, and will have no rapport with any of his receivers.

As far as the rest of the team goes, Favre doesn't seem to get along with his teammates these days either. Look at all of the incidents in New York, with Thomas Jones and Favre not having dressed with the team, traveled with the team, or anything else. He sees himself as better than his teammates and this won't bode well in Minnesota.

The Vikings will surely generate a lot of buzz with this move, and it may be good for them as far as publicity goes. As far as their success, though, I can't say that I think they'll have a better record in 2009.

To wrap it up, I believe Favre will not be a good addition to the Vikings because of his age/injury risk, his deteriorating arm strength and skills as a QB, and his inconsistency. Not to mention, he won't be able to develop any chemistry with his receivers, and if they don't win the Super Bowl this year, it would be a huge setback for the Vikings' organization. Honestly, it seems like Favre signed with the Vikings out of spite. Heck, just about a month ago, Favre said he wasn't going to play this season because "he didn't think he could perform at a high level." Uh huh. So what has changed? Aside from the fact that he now has a slight tear in his rotator cuff. While I still think Favre is one of the best QB's ever, I feel like this whole situation has somewhat tainted his brilliant career. I really do hope he does well because I don't want to see him fall flat on his face. I want to see him go out on top, but with Favre constantly "un-retiring," I think he never will.

Yang will probably make few headlines anytime soon, and the once "sure prospect" of Woods beating Jack Nicklaus' record for majors one is suddenly not such a sure thing anymore.

What do people get to look to now? "Oh, I can't wait to see Tiger take revenge in the exciting series of FedEx cup event"? No! They are looking to, "Hey, Anthony Kim or Rory McIllroy are ready to take the torch next year."

We need the Tiger, the best golfer, to be well, the best golfer. He needs to hold leads on Sunday. He needs people to be scared on the last few holes with Tiger on the prowl. We need Tiger Woods to dominate everybody and ask questions later. If he's labeled the best, he needs to start performing in the biggest and best events.

We need Tiger to be Tiger and everyone else to watch in amazement as he wins Majors, no offense to them, but fans don't want Y.E. Yang, Angel Cabrera, or Lucas Glover to win. They want Tiger, and Tiger needs to deliver.

Whether you will be dayhiking or doing a multi-day backpacking trip, these items will insure a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.

Obtain a map of where you will be hiking. Usually, you can pick one up at the park visitor center or ranger station. You can also download maps from various websites. Having a good map will not only will not only prevent you from getting lost, but it can help rescuers find you if you suffer an injury.

A map reading compass will help you find your bearings and keep you from getting lost. Using the map and compass together will keep you correctly oriented to know which direction you're heading.

Two, one liter bottles of water so that you stay hydrated. This is your minimum required intake per day, but since hiking is physically demanding you will drink more, especially in warmer climates. You can survive for a month without food, but only two or three days without water. You should have some sort of water treatment with you. I carry Aqua-Mira, which is a liquid purifying agent.

Take a bit more food than you think you will need, to get you through an extra day if need be. This can easily be accomplished by having a few whole food bars with you, each of which constitute a complete meal replacement. Important for maintaining energy output.

A few more layers of clothing for comfort and safety. Temperatures can drop unexpectedly or at nightfall. If you hike through rain or fall into a creek, having only one layer of wet clothes when it starts getting colder can spell disaster. Make sure to wear synthetics as they are more insulative when wet and dry quickly.

Take a flashlight with you. You may want to purchase a headlamp so that you can be hands-free. Every once in a while, you will be out a bit later than expected. Negotiating a hiking trail in the dark is dangerous.

Having an accident or injury in the backcountry is no fun. Bring a small first aid kit with you. You can create one out of household supplies but don't forget hiking needs like moleskin or blister treatment. I recommend taking a basic wilderness medicine course.

Matches, a lighter and or candle as firestarters. Be certain to keep them in a waterproof container. Only light a fire in the wilderness if it is a matter of survival, not just simply staying warm if an additional layer of clothing will do. Prevent wildfires, use caution!

Carry a knife with you. Mine has come in handy so many times. If you use a folding knife, make sure that it has a locking blade. Non-locking knives have closed on fingers!

Don't forget the sunblock. Bring some sunglasses as well and you may want a cap with a visor or brim for extra UV protection. Your skin and eyes will be much happier.

A Twenty First Century First. A Harley Davidson With Brakes!

The year 2008 was Harley Davidson's 105th anniversary which isn't a particularly well recognised milestone I'll admit but that didn't stop them celebrating it with style as they have done every 5 years since God Knows when. It also happened to be the 25th Anniversary of H.O.G. - the Harley Owners Club - which was arguably more significant.

Several events were planned by Harley Davidson to mark the occasion. Kicking off a full four days of partying was an organised State-Wide ride-out. Beginning at 105 separate dealers across the country the run was planned to culminate at the Milwaukee lakefront and follow naturally through to a non-stop festival of activities and music. They also opened a museum dedicated to the history of the brand and produced a limited edition styling pack for 14 separate models in their range.

They weren't just simple styling packs either. As well as offering delicious copper and black colour schemes, with tasteful detailing including copper shield decorations to tanks and air cleaners plus matching inserts to seats, they also offered something new. Fitted as an option to some models and standard to the top of the range was a Harley Davidson first - Advanced ABS with Brembo disks.

Not content with implementing an existing system the image-conscious brand felt it necessary to design the system from the bottom up, hiding many of the elements completely from sight within the wheel hubs themselves. The result also ended up being rather lighter than the existing methods would have allowed.

The very top of the range motorcycle to receive this treatment was the already impressively spec'd CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide. Fitted as standard with luxuries as far-reaching as heated leather seats and built in Satellite Navigation, the addition of a truly functional ABS braking system to the Anniversary Edition made it a touring machine and a half.

The best thing of all though is the engine. It's what makes Harley Davidson's so iconic in the first place and the Twin Cam 110 (1803cc) motor they use in this machine keeps all the character of noise and shake we have come to expect. Extensive rubber mounting ensures the shake stays with the engine though, keeping the rider and passenger free of stress able to enjoy the ride and just listen to that glorious noise.

The only real competition this motorcycle has in its class is, in my opinion, the Honda Goldwing. On paper they have an amazingly similar spec, even the engine sizes almost match. But in reality let's be honest, one of them has infinitely more style than the other. In fact it takes image into a completely different league. And with brakes that actually work I can't imagine there's much choice left at all and the votes will have already been cast.
