Consider Cheap Drum Kits as You Learn to Play Drums

By Oscar Acosta

If I was buying tools or clothing, I try to buy quality so it will last. As a beginner drummer, I bought a cheap drum kit and was glad I did. I did not have the money at the time to waste and would have regretted a big investment up front. I mainly wanted to try it out and learn to play the drums.

I always wanted to play drums since high school. I was a rudiment drummer and had a talent for playing but never pursued the drums. Eventually I obsessed about learning and playing drums. Like most people I could not justify a lot of money to spend on it.

Fortunately there were plenty of options to start out at a reasonable price range say, $250-$500. My original kit was used and fairly well worn in. I did not care since I was focused on learning to play and gauge my interest along the way before committing to big money on a really good sounding kit.

Your choice are brand and off brand. Try to stay clear of low end off brands unless your budget is tight. Buying a higher end off brand would be best if not a low end brand name. Brand name drum kits include Pearl, Ludwig, Gretch, and DW. Consider your investment in cymbals as these can vary greatly. You can always upgrade from your cheap drum kit.

Know your goal as someone who is going to play in a band, play for self enjoyment or even considering a professional career. Each has a different level of committment and discipline. Your resources must be prioritized and setting proper expectations is helpful. Playing the drums is the best part of the band in my opinion.

Buying an electronic drum kit can be a sensible option. Especially first starting out. The reason being you can control the volume if you live in an apartment or tight neighborhood. The other reason is variations of sounds. Each drum and cymbal can have a unique sound to further your experience and enjoyment. A separate amplifier needs to be purchased.

I highly recommend taking drum lessons. Either from a one on one instructor or choose one of the good DVD program online. You will not regret it. You save money on buying a cheap drum kit, now invest in your skills. You will enjoy playing more and it may ensure you stick with drumming. Your family will be glad for it and if you're really good the thousands of fans will appreciate it too.
