Guide to Getting the Best Wedding Photography

By Paige Monserai

If you'll be celebrating your wedding soon, a photographer is going to be an important part of your planning. You might think you can just ask a family member or friend to bring a digital camera, but that's a bad idea. The difference between snapshots and professional portraits is enormous.

If you want to make sure you have quality keepsakes, you need to get a professional, but you also need to know what you're looking for. Good photographers should understand the importance of your wedding, not treat it like just another job. You deserve to have your wedding treated carefully and personally.

Wedding photographers have an exciting opportunity in front of them. They have the option to capture expressions and important moments on one of the biggest days of your life. A wedding is an important event, when you're surrounded by family and friends and making a commitment that'll change your life forever - you deserve to have it captured properly.

This is why you need to choose a photographer who understands what they're doing and is trained to deal with weddings specifically. They should be able to handle any style, from theme weddings and contemporary ceremonies to highly traditional ceremonies. They should take the time to understand what you want out of your wedding and your pictures, then take the time to help you get it.

You should be yourself in your wedding pictures, and so should your guests. Too many wedding photos turn out stiff and unnatural. A good photo will be spontaneous, natural, and fun, not stiff and boring!

Your wedding photographer needs to have high quality equipment that allows for taking detailed, high quality images, and he or she needs to know just how to use it. Retouching shouldn't be the solution to all photographic problems. There's nothing wrong with a little, but it should be done carefully, on an image that's already beautiful.

Remember to look for extras, including easy payment methods, album planning and photo planning consultations, and more. Consider having a couple's portrait session before the big day - that'll let you get to know your photographer and help your photographer understand your unique personality. You'll get some truly memorable images out of the session.

You should be able to get a relatively quick result, and see your photos and be able to plan your album shortly after the wedding. Expect to get your album in a month or two, depending on how busy the photographer is - don't rush things, though your photographer should be able to offer allowances for photos needed faster. Be patient and pick the right photographer to make sure your wedding photos are perfect.

Great photos are a tangible reminder of all the wonderful memories of your wedding day. Take the time to make sure that yours are beautiful, well made, and true to you. Good wedding photography is definitely worth the time.
