A Great Start to NFL 2009 Season

By Elliot Bravans

Someone bring Lendale White a towel. I think he might seek to hide his head under one during his way away from Pittsburgh.

On a night where Troy Polamalu succumbed to a knee wound, Wille Parker and the rest of the Steelers RB corps couldn't manage to get things going, and Hines Ward did one thing he rarely does - fumbled during a huge play scenario. Ben Roethlisberger was steady in the back field, took some sacks, but ultimately engineered yet one more game winning drive to help the Steelers edge the Titans 13-10 in the football inaugural game.

It did not begin well for Roethlisberger and crew; Tennessee looked as good as ever and basically locked Pittsburgh's rush game down.

Big Ben was cool under pressure, though. Yes, he threw 2 picks (Brett Favre does this religiously, and there are fans willing to kiss his feet when he enters a room, so get off this).

But he also passed for 363 yards, which included 60 yards during his final drive of the game.

The defense rose to the occasion and performed when the chips were down, mainly when it came to special teams, where a blocked Rob Bironas FG led to their only touchdown of the night.

Of course, that play ended up costing them Troy Polamalu, although it only set them back for a moment or two.

If Hines Ward had either fallen down or turned a little faster at the climax of his run in the 4th quarter, the game would have finished earlier.

But this was too great a contest to not go to overtime. Both franchises had played hard, both franchises had players go down to injury, and an extra period seemed the only reasonable way to settle things.

If, that is, you can deem pro football overtimes fair.

After the Steelers won the coin toss, Roethlisberger and company made the most of a tired Titans defense, driving downfield for 63 yards to set up the game-winning field goal.
